1968 Yamaha XS650 Transformation
Posted by olagill under Design, Vehicle | Tags: 1968 Yamaha XS650, Design Boom |Leave a Comment
Wood-burning stoves are not common in indonesia, but have influenced barata dwiputra, lead builder of thrive motorcycles to re-imagine a classic 1968 yamaha XS650. Taking over a year to locate and obtain the bike itself, the transformation was completed in just two months, including a complete engine overhaul and hand-fabricated bodywork. To create a more aggressive aesthetic, the wheelbase was lengthened using a custom swing-arm and the front end was slightly lowered; the colors have been reduced to shades of black, with brass and copper accents for the details. For functionality, a pair of leather belts have been fitted under the battery box, designed to hold a flannel shirt or jacket in place and a custom canvas bag containing the tools needed to maintain the XS650. Christopher Morris – NYC Subway In 1981
Posted by olagill under Photography | Tags: Christopher Morris, Design Boom |Leave a Comment
Whether you live, have visited or are contemplating taking a trip to New York City, american photographer Christopher Morris proves that you might not have wanted to be there in the 1980s. At the time, the urban landscape was littered with graffiti, crime and grime, and the underground metro system took the brunt of it. Patterning nearly every inch of the train’s interior and exterior walls and surfacing the waiting platforms are a chaotic mess of layers upon layers of street tags, stickers and filth.
Morris’ series of images ‘NYC subway 1981′ reveal the poorly-lit subterranean sphere during rush hour — bustling with hoards of commuters pressed up against filthy windows — and at night — when the often edgy scenes expose criminal activities publicly and frequently taking place there. Not only do the pictures acknowledge the disrepair of a metropolis in despair, but they also establish a tone of some major cultural milestones. One of the photos taken is of two of the city’s ‘guardian angles’, an organization founded in 1979 to combat widespread violence in the subway, watching over the scene, which illustrates one of the first attempts to improve the situation. Another is a rare shot of an original work by artist keith haring crudely drawn on the platform, expressing the street culture of the 1980s. Fortunately a bygone era for a now-mended and reorganized commute operation, the series verifies that New York has seen it all.(via Design Boom)

Heather Hansen – “Kinetic Drawing”
Posted by olagill under Creativity, Fine Art | Tags: Design Taxi, Heather Hansen |Leave a Comment
Based in New Orleans, performance artist Heather Hansen specializes in ‘kinetic drawing’, a technique that uses her entire body to create large scale drawings on paper. Treating her body just like a paint brush, she creates amazing symmetrical shapes and patterns by tracing her body movements with charcoal. According to My Moder Met, her expressive dance-art works are being shown in a group exhibition titled ‘The Value of a Line’ at The Ochi Gallery in Idaho. The exhibition will run through to 31 March 2014. (via Design Taxi)
