Today´s positive/magic song is Happy Mondays “Step On” from their third studio album “Pills ‘n’ Thrills and Bellyaches” released in 1990 by Factory Records.. It´s a cover of John Kongos “He’s Gonna Step on You Again” (a.k.a. “Step On”) released in 1971. It became their biggest-selling single, peaking at No. 5 in the UK and even making it on to the Billboard Hot 100 chart at No. 57. The repeated phrase in the song “you’re twisting my melon, man” was later reused for the title of Shaun Ryder’s autobiography Twisting My Melon. The band chose British DJ Paul Oakenfold and his frequent collaborator Steve Osbourne to produce the “Pills ‘n’ Thrills and Bellyaches” album based on their work on various remixes for the band’s previous singles. It was recorded at Eden Studios in London throughout 1989 and early 1990. The album was the band’s commercial breakthrough in the band’s country of origin, propelling the Happy Mondays to the top of their commercial success amidst the height of the Madchester and baggy cultural scenes. Along with the Stone Roses’ self-titled debut album, it is considered to be the centerpiece of the Madchester movement.

I still remember hearing this song in early 1990 and I was so blown away by the sound and crazy lyrics. At that point I hadn´t heard about Happy Mondays and when they released “Pills ‘n’ Thrills and Bellyaches” later that year it became an album I listened to over and over again and I simply couldn´t get tired of it. It´s still a fantastic album. #CoronaBeGoneYouBastard #DayThirtynine

27 years ago today on 27th November 1990 Happy Mondays released their third studio album “Pills ‘n’ Thrills and Bellyaches”. And what an album that is. I played it until my ears bled. Still one of the best albums from the 90s. #HappyMondays
